Phoenix of Tragedy Album “liner notes”

Through hell & high water…

While many of you know me as the fun & lovable “Nater” with a wild side, some of you may not know that I have Muscular Dystrophy or maybe it’s common knowledge, I don’t know, maybe you don’t even know me at all. If you watch me walk or get up from sitting down, you can see there’s a hitch in my giddy up. It’s not something I usually like to share or talk about, but, it would be hard to talk about Phoenix of Tragedy without speaking about how hard it was for me to make it.

With Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy comes a boatload of pain, fatigue, weakness, & headaches/migraines. It forced me to stop playing live gigs, altered the style, aggressiveness and the way I play guitar, as well as the amount of time I can play. Not being able to play live anymore and beating cancer in 2016 was a huge driving forces behind me opening Bailey Park Studio & writing Phoenix Of Tragedy. 

By the time I get the mics set up, I’m already feeling the pain and fatigue, playing a riff or a chord is already getting difficult for my hands and arms. And when you listen to this album and ask why the songs are so “dark” – this is your answer. Every session for this album involved some level of pain. Some more than others…

Even without physical ailments, making an album by yourself is difficult, to say the least. As the artist, producer & engineer I lose objectivity and after a working on it for so long. I start to second guess if the changes I’m making are improving the song or not. In the end I just sit back and follow where the song takes me and hope that it is sonically the best I can make it. At some point you just have to stop fucking tinkering. “Art is never finished, only abandoned.” – Leonardo da Vinci

Rise, you’re the Phoenix of Tragedy…

While this album wasn’t easy and it was painful, it sure as hell was fun to make, and I’m enjoying listening to the final mixes and sharing them with my friends and family. And, I realize as I type this from my desk at Bailey Park Studio, that I’m living the dream. I beat cancer, started a recording studio, and now I’ve finished my album… It’s kind of the theme of this album, rising up through tragedy and pain to become a fucking bird of fire.

I feel like I’m finally finding my true singing voice and my songs are developing into more complex and textured creatures than I could have imagined writing two years ago. And, even though the songs on this album are generally of the melancholy nature, you should know that I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I’ve got the love and support of an incredible woman, I still have this burning drive to create music & I have the studio to create the music in.

Special thanks to Paul Hill, Sophia Charpenteir and Blake Theese for their musical contributions on this album. I was lucky enough to have Paul play drums on several tracks, his playing really help bring these songs to life. Sophia Charpentier contributed her silky vocals to the song “On The Run.” This song also features my son Blake Theese, who wrote that sick beat, killer piano and fat synth bass. First, I funked out with my beat up Strat and the lyrics & melody just kind of poured out of me.

Bring on 2017!

Time to say goodbye to 2016. I’m not gonna lie, this was a tough year. I made it through cancer, but a close friend of mine didn’t. We also lost some big names in the last year, Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and Carrie Fisher to name some of my favorites. Has someone looked in on Tom Waits? We need to make sure he’s safe….

BUT!!

Good things are coming in 2017.

Picture here is my new Orange TH30 1×12 combo amp that I won from Orange Amplification on Christmas Day. This little 1×12″ sounds killer and I can’t wait to start recording with it.

 

I’ve already got 6 or 7 new songs, and this time they will be full songs, with lyrics, harmonies… the whole 9 yards. I’ll spare no expense, unless it costs real money. If it costs money I’ll have to pass lol. This will probably be recorded and mixed at my home studio, unless someone wants to volunteer to mix this untamed  beast.

Also, I could use a producer, I sometimes find it hard to produce myself, not that I’m a difficult artist to work with, but, because I start to second guess my songs when I wear all the hats- songwriter, musician, recording engineer, & producer.

I’m hoping to have some special guests on this album and hoping to have it out sometime this summer.

Well, I’m babbling now, time to go. I hope 2016 didn’t defeat you too badly, and I hope good things come to us all in 2017.

New Album – Prairie Dogs Have Plague!

prairie-dogs-have-plague-front-coverThis is an album of song ideas that have accumulated over the last 10 years. These short little ditties were all just stragglers, wandering around on my hard drive, not doing anything. They were just train track hobos with no jobs or ambitions…. Just some bastard songs who had no home. So, I decided to build them this little “hobo camp” of an album.

Many of these ideas were late night ramblings, I would move on to the next idea before fully flushing out the last idea and never actually finishing them. Kind of like “musical A.D.D.”

Over the last few months I’ve gone back and finished some of these songs. At first I wanted to release an epic 31 song, 46 minute album with a bunch of really short unfinished songs that all ran together… But, I’ve decided to do a shorter more cohesive album of 8 songs. I think some of these songs would be great for a movie or even a tv theme song.

I’ve worked pretty hard on this the last few months, many late nights were spent in front of my computer recording various instruments. I’m not saying this album is the next Sgt. Pepper, hell, I’m not even saying it’s any good. But, I like it. I had fun recording it, and I hope you have fun listening to it.

And, to answer your question, yes they do have bubonic plague. Look it up.

Don’t worry about the other 22 train track hobo songs… I’ll be putting them to work in my studio real soon, hopefully with some guest musician friends (apply within), because music is more enjoyable with friends!

Potato Chip Guitar Pick

I remember back in the summer of 1999, or maybe it was the fall of 2000, I was recording a track at my home studio. And I couldn’t quite get the sound right… So, I tried playing the guitar with a potato chip, actually it was a tortilla chip… A yellow one… It was made from corn and black beans… I remember we had a whole bag of them, and I said “Oh wouldn’t it be funny if I recorded this song with a chip.” It took a bunch of takes because the damn chips kept falling apart.

And that song was “Hammer In The Back” from Dog Vomit Pizza
